_"THE NOTORIOUS YEARLY CHECKLIST"
Are you for or against making New Year's resolutions?

I'm all for New Year's resolutions. I generally attempt to focus my
resolution on those tiny behaviors that can influence great change
in my life. A few years ago I committed to reading at least one book
a week for a total of 52 books for the year. I rounded out the year
having read 78 books. I was richer; I was more interesting; I fell
in love with the library again. That same year I also committed to
setting and keeping all doctor appointments. I'm enjoying much
better health because the doctor found some things that needed to be
addressed. Sometimes it's great to dream the impossible
dream...other times, it's more appropriate to dream the "do-able"
dream and watch what happens.

Proverbs 18a says "Where there is no vision, the people perish". I
always feel it is important to have vision, dreams, goals to keep
you moving forward. So are goals important to us, in our day to day
spiritual lives? Yes, I think so, lest we perish. Without a goal,
you will not accomplish much. From little things, like picking up
the trash the dog tore up in your yard, to reading the Word daily,
to ........ (you pick one), without having a goal to do so, you are
less likely to do it. So I do believe goals are good. Now to the
question of New Years resolutions or goals. If you are good at
setting a priority and following thru, it is OK for you to set a few
goals at the beginning of the year. But if you have trouble in this
area, then a year long goal might not be your best bet at this time.
Work on smaller goal settings, until you are good at completing
them, and then move to larger ones like year long goals.
I was walking in a park on New Years day, and as I was on a trail, I
met a family coming up a hill to the trail I was on, with the Mom of
the family saying, "and we are going to do this everyday this year!
I chuckled within myself "New Years Resolution". Only that family
knows if they are fulfilling the goal they set, but I have my
doubts. Goals are good, and I encourage all to make them. Just don't
make them if you know you aren't going to give it your all to
accomplish. "Where there is no vision, the people perish". So to
answer the question, I am not against New Year's resolutions, but I
am against making them if a person isn't going to give their all
toward the goal.

I think New Year's resolutions are a waste of time because within a
few weeks - if that long - they are forgotten! I am all for new
beginnings everyday and striving to show God's love to as many
people as I can for that day in whatever way I can. I know that when
my love walk is right all the other areas of my life fall into place
and I am doing the things that I would of been making resolutions
about anyway!

I usually make half a dozen resolutions and keep one of them. It's
easy to set the bar too high at the start of the year, then look
back with regret. Six resolutions is a good amount for me; any
fewer, and I likely wouldn't fulfill the one. So, I look forward to
a 16.6% success rate each year.
